## What this tells you

- Whether a company or LLP with the same name, ignoring the corporate suffix, is on the register.
- Whether close names exist, and the state each is registered in.
- Whether those entities are still active or have been struck off.

## What it does not tell you

- **Whether the registrar will approve your name.** That decision applies naming rules this page does not, and those rules were amended in 2026.
- **Whether the name conflicts with a registered trade mark.** Trade marks are a separate register. A name clear of the companies register can still be refused on one.
- **Whether somebody has already reserved the name.** A reserved name is not on the register until the company is incorporated.

A struck-off company still holds its name on the register. Finding a dead company with the name you want is not the same as finding the name free.
